Non-local Means Filter for Polarimetric Sar Speckle Reduction -experiments Using Terrasar-x Data

چکیده
The speckle is omnipresent in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images as an intrinsic characteristic. However, it is unwanted in certain applications. Therefore, intelligent filters for speckle reduction are of great importance. It has been demonstrated in several literatures that the non-local means filter can reduce noise while preserving details. This paper discusses non-local means filter for polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) speckle reduction. The impact of different similarity approaches, weight kernels, and parameters in the filter were analysed. A data-driven adaptive weight kernel was proposed. Combined with different similarity measures, it is compared with existing algorithms, using fully polarimetric TerraSAR-X data acquired during the commissioning phase. The proposed approach has overall the best performance in terms of speckle reduction, detail preservation, and polarimetric information preservation. This study suggests the high potential of using the developed nonlocal means filer for speckle reduction of PolSAR data acquired by the next generation SAR missions, e.g. TanDEM-L and TerraSAR-X NG. * Corresponding author.

Interest in urban feature characterization has increased with the potential of polarimetric satellite SAR data from ALOS (already in orbit), Radarsat-2, TerraSAR, and Cosmo-SkyMed. The Touzi-Decomposition [1] has been introduced for both coherent and incoherent decomposition of target scattering using polarimetric SAR data. In contrast to the existing scattering decompositions [2, 3], the Touzi...

With the launch of the German TerraSAR-X system in June 2007, a new generation of high-resolution spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data is available; which facilitates a spatially and thematically detailed SAR scene analysis. In fact, the high resolution of TerraSAR-X enables scene on land cover, such as urban areas, deserts, forests and fields, to be accurately mapped. Among the sever...
متن کاملComparison of using single- or multi-polarimetric TerraSAR-X images for segmentation and classification of man-made maritime objects
Spaceborne SAR imagery offers high capability for wide-ranging maritime surveillance especially in situations, where AIS (Automatic Identification System) data is not available. Therefore, maritime objects have to be detected and optional information such as size, orientation, or object/ship class is desired. In recent research work, we proposed a SAR processing chain consisting of pre-processi...

This paper presents a technique for reducing speckle in Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PolSAR) imagery using Nonlocal Means and a statistical test based on stochastic divergences. The main objective is to select homogeneous pixels in the filtering area through statistical tests between distributions. This proposal uses the complex Wishart model to describe PolSAR data, but the technique...

Different decomposition approaches have been proposed in order to analyse and interpret SAR polarimetric images. These are based either on the complex voltage reflection matrix, like Pauli, or on power reflection matrix, like the covariance or coherency matrix. They produce polarimetric parameters which are appropriate to retrieve information on the scattering process of the target. If the targ...
